new pics of the McLaren P11, the F1's succesor
« on: 17-Dec-2007, 22:42:50 »
CAR magazine claims this is pretty much what it's gonna look like and I've got to say, if it is, then I'm gonna like it.

Quote
McLaren is one of the most successful race teams in Formula One, but unlike rival Ferrari, it doesn't make many road cars. Its current supercar, the Mercedes SLR McLaren, was a relative disappointment, particularly when judged against the impossibly high yardstick of its predecessor, the McLaren F1, which remains one of the quickest, fastest and all-around best-performing supercars of all time. So when the Woking, England-based firm announced the development of the P11, potential customers began calling the factory, which has already taken dozens of orders long before the car has even been unveiled.

British magazine CAR claims to have the inside line on the supercar, having spoken with some of the engineers working on the project – McLaren is said to be in the process of hiring more –and have put together an educated guess on the car's spec sheet. While the F1 diced it with the likes of the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959, and the SLR took on the Enzo and Carrera GT, the car tentatively code-named P11 is expected to go down-market (that being a relative term, of course) to target the likes of the 430 Scuderia and 911 GT2. Power is anticipated to come from sibling-company AMG's 6.3-liter V8, putting some 500 horsepower down through the rear wheels for a sub-4-second run to sixty and a top speed over 200 mph. Expect carbon-ceramic brakes to figure into an aluminum and carbon-fiber package sized in between Audi's TT and R8.

CAR claims its renderings are fairly close to the mark for the supercar that will launch in 2010 and be produced in annual runs of less than 5,000. Don't expect the car to be dipped in chrome like its grand prix stable-mates, though.

Thanks for the tip, Alex!

meh it's not bad but it could be any wannabe supercar maker (faroush or whatever his name is, that artega GT car, you name them...), it doesn't really look distinctive...

My thoughts - looks like the Ascari from the front...

I guess it's the problem of having one single car that happens to be the greatest car ever... that's something REALLY hard to replace :?

the Artega is SO much better looking than this....this is just so generic looking!  it's like a 15 year old drew a supercar, and then they decided to make it!

but then again, i never really liked the F1's style either...even in person, when i saw the GTR sitting next to other supercars, i thought it looked so ordinary.

as it has been said already, this doesnt look like anything "super", and the specs of it are far from anything great. instead of going forward, it seems they are going backward.

well, I guess they had to cut back on some hours in the R&D dept, since they had to deal with a 100million dollar fine and all the bad exposure they got!!

hahaha

On the looks side it's nothing extra ordinary, but if it delivers as much as it's predecessor, then it's just form of functionality. It will be nice to see what it can do.

Strikes me as Cayman mixed with 360 Modena?

If it's from McLaren, no doubt it'll be top notch though...and top dollar.

lol the scud is faster than the enzo at fiorano and the gt2 is faster then the cgt at the ring. not exactly "downmarket".

i think mclaren want to reestablish their reputation with this and distance themselves from the SLR.

i wouldnt take too much from that pic either... too early to tell and nothing official.

The problem is that it will always be compare to the F1 wich was an exceptional car (love it or hate it ) by its weight, power and purity. I wonder if they will do it  :? I think that they have the legitimity to make sports cars with all their pedigree but it's not easy now without a big car maker for all the registrations and laws ...

McLaren road car w/o Gordon Murray seems a bit strange. Hope this car will be a good baby brother to the F1. I think we are seeing computer simulated photogrpahs - we have the basic structure of the F1 which has been modernized a bit and some extra large wheels added.

I agree with Dani, first thing that came up in me was: Ascari. Don't like the looks, but I guess the final result will be much diffrent.

CAR Magazine (again) reveals new photos which they claim aren't photoshopped or anything. It looks good to me and the design is clearly reminiscent of the F1

Exactly, it looks like something Noble or the likes would do, it doesn't feel special and I doubt we'll have things like golden plating or titanium toolkit for this one.
