iPod Touch/iPhone applications topic
« on: 29-Sep-2008, 15:56:22 »
I've been a iPhone user for... 3 days so far, and all I have is good words about it. The possibility of downloading apps to personalize it makes it way better than any other phone I've had before. So... I think it would be a great idea to post the apps you've got for your device (either if it's iPhone or iTouch) and share them with the rest of iFanatics  In my case:

One of the first things I did was getting Dynolicious:
http://dynolicious.com/ -> and although I still have to try it seriously, after a quick test (13 seconds to 100 with the Meriveyron)... it really looks promising :)
I also got the iPint -> http://www.carling.com/ipint_details.html -> pretty useless but fun when you're having a beer with your buddies...
iGolf -> http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/09/17/sgn-launches-igolf-for-iphone-wii-action-is-here/
Lightsaber -> http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/star-wars/isaber-makes-your-iphone-a-lightsaber-298631.php -> totally useless... and it doesn't even works fine, but how cool it is to feel like Darth Vader!!
Sol Free -> solitaire game, no big deal but useful in moments of true boredom
http://www.appletell.com/apple/comment/appletell-review-sol-free-solitaire-for-iphone/
Remote -> wireless control command for my MacBooks iTunes :)
http://gizmodo.com/5023715/apple-remote-iphone-app-controls-your-itunes-over-wi+fi
Shazam -> http://www.shazam.com/music/web/home.html -> without a doubt, the most amazing feature for iPhone I've seen. Have you ever heard a song in a shopping mall that you don't know the name but that you want badly? this is your app! just get the iPhone, click on tag song and that's it, in 5 seconds you have the name of the song, the album, direct links to buy it on iTunes and sometimes even a link to a YouTube vid... and all for free, and working with very weird stuff (rock bands that only my brother knows) and it works perfectly! :)
Trailguru -> http://www.trailguru.com/ui/tour/iphone.php
Tells you the distance you've traveled and the average speed thanks to the GPS... pretty cool stuff!
Stanza -> http://www.lexcycle.com/ -> useful app to read eBooks wherever you go...

I only paid like $12 for the Dynolicious... the rest are all free :)

I have only the Dynolicious on my iPod. Maybe I'll find some other useless applications later  ;)

Who of you guys have it? How happy you are with it? Would you change it for some other that is on the market in same price range? well... basically dose it worth to have it?

It's been in my pocket for 4 months now... and I wouldn't change it for anything. Ok, sure the Nokia and Blackberry of similar pricerange are better value-for-money... but the iPhone is just soo much cooler and good-looking... and the interface is pretty much perfect! :)

Ok, yes... I'm a bit of a Apple-fanboy I admit it.

Aaaaaaaanyway, and trying to be objective, the phonecamera is a bit shitty... ok, it takes some nice shots at full daylight, but as soon as the conditions start to get worse, the build-in cameras on the Nokias for example are just soo much better

Aaaaaaaaand, there are no MMS... but well, you can always send the pics by email, so it's not a big deal, only difference is that they won't get to the destinatary as quick as an MMS.

I would advice midomi : save as Shazam but some musics are recognized wile not by Shazam  ;)
Also Devise, Virtualradio (for France only ??),  Facebook, Voicenotes, Google Earth, Fiatlux saved my life once (I lost my wedding's ring in the dark  )

Very nice phone but I also like my N95  :good:

I finally got me a white iPhone 3g 16 GB. What a joy! I'm sorry, but all the haters, on the net and real world can go on with their blabber about the fact there are tons of better smartphones... and they just don't realize the bullshit the throw around. Same as the ipod(s), nothing come close to an apple product as far as user friendlyness, intuitive controls, perfect quality and executions and so on. You even wonder why they should try to copy and improve when there is nothing to improve really. Just perfect IMO.

I obviously already got Dynolicious just in case, Shazam, Solfree, facebook for iphone, fiatlux as suggested above, and added also Google Earth, iTranslate just in case, SwissSnow (snow reports from tons of Swiss towns) and more to come :)

BTW, for work I've an HTC, which is obviously light years better to read emails, attachments, use a work oriented agenda and so on, but as a private phone it would suck :D

Bloody hell! Almost incredible: I found an app doing exactly what spiritmonitor.de do for you. I already back up all the costs of my cars on an Excel file I created, but now I can input them right away on my iphone thanks to the Road Trip app (there is also a Lite version for free, but I paid the CHF 5 for the full one, which support more vehicles)

I have it cause, well, I like to have the new gadgets always ;)

I am very happy with, I've had it since one week after it was released cause we didn't get enough 16GB, and I wouldn't change it for other phone.

Is it worth it? yeah, if you use MMS or Videochat often then it's not your option

Thanks! Shazam isn't available for Mexico so this suggestion was great!!

Other apps I have:

GPS Tracker: Tracks your route thru GPS and then you can check it on your computer.

Zenbe Lists: Basically is a "to do" list, very easy and functional with the option of synchronization

NYTimes: News

Bloomberg: Market, Stocks, Currencies, etc etc

YPmobile: US Yellow Pages

Epocrates: Info about medicines, pretty useful in case of needing it, I don't take medications but it's a good guide.

Wikipanion: Wikipedia search on your iPhone

Convertor: Units convertor, very good for precise conversions

Wine Guide: Just if you like wines, has many reviews of wines, grades of the vintages, etc. It even has vocabulary if you don't know much about wines. So next time if you want to know how good is the wine you're purchasing or if it's worth what you paid or less or more this is a great app.

Parlingo: instant messaging app to which you can add your msn account

WiFi Discover: Ok so the iPhone doesn't send data via bluetooth, this is the solution, thru a wifi connection you cand send data to other iphones! excellent app!

Audio Rec: Audio recording for all the hours you have space

Games: Cowabunga, Mahjong, CannonGame, Tris, Sudoku, Bowl, FS5 Hockey, Tangram Pro, Enigmo, Brain Tuner, Dactyl, Topple, Labyrinth, 123...WL, Falling Balls

I suggest them ALL most are FREE.

I'm not going to criticize the iPhone (and I could, at length), but I will say one thing...

The one that's worth watching right now is Palm's "Pre". Palm's new hardware chief was an ex-Apple man. Specifically, the guy who was behind the iPod's hardware. And now they've got an OS on the Pre that is basically what Windows 7 is to OSX.

It's the 90's all over again. :)

Yeah, theres ton of way to criticize the iphone, I can say it's not the best phone money can buy.

As fot the new Palm, well, I'm always open to new stuff, it's better to have many options to choose form than just one

The Pre is a nice "compromise". :) I wouldnt compare Win7 to the Pre. It's like comparing a know politician-crook who became a priest to a has been singer who is now a popular judge on Amerian Idol.

iPhone's just Mrs Beckam being all posh.

Yep, but this time Apple's got the lead in software application development. It's amazing how Microsoft let this one slip through their hands yet again, even though they've been making handheld computers since the 90s.

Palm's new OS, WebOS is really something to look after. A cellphone operating system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up specifically for a cell phone. It's amazing that Apple squeezed OS X down to the iPhone platform. The way that WebOS will constantly be pulling data from the internet really makes for a new way to design the system.

What they need to focus on is catching up to Apple's App Store. It's pretty ridiculous what the App Store has done to the software development industry.. I'm hoping Palm releases a very open SDK.. and a nicer piece of hardware. I think they could have done better than what the Pre is... but I guess they're going to capitalize on different handsets down the road.

What's the name of that app? Looks pretty cool...

I think I have to update my first post... I've got like a 30 new useless apps worth a look

It's called Road Trip and if you want to keep track of more than one vehicle you have to pay for it (I did). It's really WELL done IMO and I just finished updating it with all the data I recorded for my cars since Jan 1st 2008  :good:

I also installed Bloomberg and accuweather, which are cooler than the standard meteo and stock market yahoo apps IMO.

BTW, I knew it already, but dang, the battery life is quite laughable compared to "normal" phones...
