My Renault 5 GT Turbo
« on: 31-Dec-2007, 20:31:13 »
This is my weekend toy...

Photosession with hi-res pics:

http://collaverglas.blog spot.com/2007/01/renault-5-gt-turbo-photosession.html

It's a 1988 Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 2. In short, it has a 1.4 litre turbo engine that gives around 120hp. Not much for today's standards... but combine that with 870kg of dry weight, and you've got it - a fucking awesome car to drive and have fun!!

Here's a small vid when I installed the gr. N "not legal for road use" (dunno why) exhaust:

R5 GT Turbo amb tubu de gr. N

It has 76,000km on the clock, and after a full revision I did to the car some months ago, replacing almost everything that needed to be replaced, I can proudly say that this is one of the finest standard turbos in Catalonia

***

1397cc, transversal 4-pot engine with a Garret T2 turbo, 8 valves, giving 120hp at 5750rpm, 165Nm or torque at 3750rpm, Solex carburator:

From Wikipedia:

Quote
In 1987, the Phase I GT Turbo was discontinued, and the Phase II was launched. Major changes in the Phase II version included installing watercooling to the turbocharger, replacing the Phase I's air-cooled setup, which dramatically extended the life of the turbo. It also received a new ignition system which permitted it to rev 500 rpm higher. These changes boosted engine output up to over 120 bhp (89 kW). Externally, the car was revamped, with changes (including new bumpers and arches) that reduced the car's drag coefficient from 0.36 to 0.35. Giving the Phase II a 0 - 60 time of 7.6 secs. Note: Power-to-weight ratio phase I 140bhp per ton, phase II 138 bhp per ton.

***

Now I'm using the standard Phase II wheels, with Bridgestones at the front and some shitty supermarket tyres at the back... "to let it slide" I'm planning to buy a new set of Advans one of these days, mounted in the set of Cup wheels... that I also plan to paint in a darker colour - may be gunmetal grey... but not black. Or may be I let them in white... looks pretty cool anyway :P

These are the wheels:

Ugly I know, but very very rare  Anyway, I prefer to stick to 13in size. Tried the 15i from a Clio 16v... and the car didn't feel as agressive, it was probably faster, but the kick of the turbo at the exit of a turn was not that noticeable :?

I'm also planning to replace the front and rear bumper for new ones since they're pretty fucked - dents, scratches... it's easier to replace them than fix them :? and paint it again in the original colour... hopefully in time for the Rebel Run 2008

My brother says it's not gonna make it, that there're just tooo many km for the GT Turbo, and that the Ring is too long and fast for the turbo to last and not blow up... but I kinda love the "epic" feel that the trip would have if I drove the GTT up there :P

I'd no idea you had one of those. That's a really cool car, must be a great little thing to drive.

It'd be great if you brought it to the meet. I know French cars are not known for their reliability, but if it made it, what a ride it would be.

Cool Renault 5 Dani and in more it's turbocharged too.  :good:

I'm sure it must be plenty of fun to drive this little car in town around corners.  ;)

Driving in one of these on high speeds must be quite scary - the first thing I would install is a rollcage.
Seen some crashphotos with bad ending for driver and car.

Managed 190kmh so far and it IS scary indeed :? :?

Never tried it again to be honest. I just cruise relaxed at 110-120kmh, and it's on mountain roads or twisties where I really push my lady a little

Now there's a car that you don't get to see in here. I guess they have vaporized from our salty roads. It looks good and I'm sure with those numbers it's very joyfull to drive around. :) :good:

Well... driving the GTT on icy is not really "fun" actually, especially with the shitty tyres I had at the back... and no ESP or ABS or anything... we had to be extreeeeemely careful

But when the road was dry.....................
