Any news already if the engine will be back to former glory until the RR?

My brother yesterday got a mail from the mechanic... apparently there's more work to do than the originally expected... some more parts to change as well... but hopefully everything will be done in time for the RR09. At least we made that pretty clear when we dropped the car :)

Apparently the previous owner... let's just say that he didn't take much care of the mechanical parts of the car: the car was re-sprayed, gorgeous Recaro seats, nice rims... but the engine was very poorly maintained :bad: All show and no go... :suspicious:

oh good news :) hope that they will fix the car in time *keeping my thumbs pressed*

When you had already issues with the LSD and open it you should switch to the diff cover from the z4  which allows
much better cooling.

As said in the RR09 topic... seems that the engine problem my brother had in the em-three needs basically a whole transplant to survive: new block, new camshafts and crankshaft, new pistons, new head, belts, valves... everything.

With less than 2 weeks to go... this is the current state of the car :scare:

New vs old crankshaft (new on top, from a group A rallycar)

The LSD:

And this is the mechanic's 260hp 2.3 M3...

WTF? Did the former owner put sugar in the tank?

More or less.

The engine had been opened before, and the valves had been changed... but not in a very professional way we could say. The camshafts were mounted the other way round, just to give you an example.

There's an endless list of stuff that was badly fixed or installed the wrong way... but I don't know how to translate most of the terms so...

This mechanic on the other hand (http://www.mecapower.com/web/index.html) took his time to explain everything, and we really had the impression he knew what he was talking about. He has been working on M3 for a while now, and knows them like the back of his hand. As I said, the first day we visited his workshop, he had 2 SportEvos (one with 270hp - he has a dyno inside the 'shop BTW) and a grp. A rallycar, that soon will be upgraded to a 2.5 litre engine :)

you are using new parts? block and head are normally able to repair. Seams that this is a good possibility to upgrade the engine to maybe 2.5l, a sharper camshaft and what I highly recommend is to install an oil baffle!

Im keeping my fingers crossed that the car will be ready in time.

Going for the 2.5 litre conversion would've duplicated the price... which is already waaaaay over the initial estimations

Carbon air-box will also have to wait a little... :)

The car has new shoes, ready for the RR10 roadtrip...

:)

They're made by Compomotive, in 17in... and IMO they look great on the E30, although the 16in rims my brother had (also from Compomotive, and to be used with semi-slight tyres in the future) fit slightly better...

The problem with that particular M3 is that the gearbox, as far as I know, has shorter ratios... so the bigger the wheels, the less revvy the engine will run... and when you have 3000 km ahead of you, it's a better option than running on smallers wheels. I don't know if this is exactly as I've put it though, since I don't know about mechanics... but it's what my brother told me when I asked him the very same question :P

Yep, makes sense  :)

The shorter gear ratio makes it the ideal track toy when you think about it (since most of them aren't that big).
Next year you should buy a trailer for your future RS2/S4 and bring the M3 to the Ring without the hassle of driving long distances  :D

Well it's not like it's a brand new Scuderia brought to the Ring because the guy didn't want to put many kilometers on it for resale purposes .. that's what I consider a trailer queen, a car that's so pampered that it can hardly be in contact of ambient air  ;)

Putting it on a trailer so that it doesn't cost a fortune in gas and your buttcheeks don't fall off isn't a crime IMO.

It only gives more credit to people who actually drive it all the way to the track.
