VW Rayra concept
« on: 14-Dec-2007, 05:02:57 »

File this under rumors: the VW Rayra concept is said to be heading to Detroit.

We’re not sure how reliable the information about this new concept is but, according to the guys at AutoSpies, Volkswagen will be presenting a new convertible concept vehicle at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. Dubbed the ‘Rayra,’ the vehicle is reportedly based on Audi R8 running gear and will be entering production in 2009.

Like the R8, the Rayra will feature a mid-engined AWD layout with a 4.2L V8 engine mated to a six-speed manual (or automatic) transmission. Peak power will be the same 420hp (313kW) at 7,800rpm as found in the R8.

Schwalbe,

the R8 Spyder will be debuting in Detroit......that's for sure!

i haven't heard anything about this Rayra though....i think it's more the pipe dream of some VW lovers....but there's no reason for this car at all! especially with the R8 around.

Hmm sounds strange that they will put that car into production and put it up against the R8....only time will tell....

upon further examination...i've determined that photo is actually a picture of the old Concept R that VW released about 4 years ago.  you guys remember that? it was a SMALL roadster.....more TT-sized...rather than R8 sized.

Concept R:

EDIT: i just read your article that says that MA recieved this information from 'AutoSpies'....let me tell you that AutoSpies is probably THE most unreliable source ever! LOL...after AutoBild, of course!

thanks for posting it though!

^^^^Sorry, but my first post in the German topic was simply to test some feature in this new forum, like if we had some well informed people here. Test passed. :D

There's no reason to have an VW R8, and yes the source is perhaps from one of the worst we can found on the net. :canadian:

That will not happen any more.

LMAO nice one.  a VW R8 would be a huge blunder on so many levels.

R8 spider? i guess that would make it more like the LeMans open wheel car but it would probably not handle as well.

HAHA. nice test

i think VW is back on track towards practicality.  They tried to go more upscale in the last 5 or 10 years....but with the 'UP!' car ready to launch in the next 2 years, and lots of strange variations of a MKV and MKVI Golf/Jetta on their way....i think they're gonna go back to selling those sort of cars.....no more Phaetons for VW!

I really liked the Concept R when it was presented some years ago, and I wonder why they never gave the green light to produce it :?

Putting there the V8 engine on the R8 is a bit too ambitious... the engine of the Golf GTI would have be$en perfect IMO to "compete" against the Audi TT.

I guess they just decided to produce the gay Eos instead :suspicious:

I thought VW was supposed to be a "peoples car". This makes no sense. Even if it's good I don't really see it as a competitor to premium brand cars like the R8.

I don't understand VAG is they go out with that directly against R8? :? The car looks very good though.
