1984 BMW E24 M635CSi
« on: 18-Aug-2009, 21:58:57 »
Hi people,

I've been a long time lurker here, but Thamar told me crawl from under my rock and post something about my car. So here goes.

Been wanting one of these ever since I was a kid, and having finally enough money to buy and maintain one, the quest was on, a couple of months ago. Found a really nice one with no rust, totally clean technical inspection certificate (or whatever various people in various countries call it), and closed the deal about a month ago. The owner was so sentimental about it that he insisted on driving it to my place, for a last ride. He was a bit heartbroken about it, but renovating a house costs a pretty penny, so this one had to go. He's still got a 71 Lotus Elan and an E21 BMW 323i to comfort him...

Car's got 177700kms on the clock, but at 109000 the engine was swapped out for a new one (with BMW certificate), so things are looking pretty good. Just love the sound of that fat 6-in-line...

Interior is almost as good as new, save for the obvious signs of a 25 year old car. Leather, ReCaro's, power everything, tripcomputer, airconditioning etc. Lots of maintenance done on the car the past three years, so it should be good for a while.

Taking the car to an M specialist next week to have it checked out, for my own peace of heart, and have an oil change etc.

Hope you like it  I, for one, am totally in love with it, and already feel one with the car, even though I'm still doing my driver's license (you read correctly, I've been biking up till now). Being a car nut and not having a car, is obviously possible  :nutz:

First night on the driveway:

Fabled M88/3 powerplant, 6-in-line, 24 valve, 286HP, 340Nm of torque

Previous mechanic thought it would be funny to put the M logo upside down because his name started with a W  :?

Put the ///M logo on the right way around

Put in a somewhat up-to-date headunit today, from an E36 M3 I believe.

Thanks guys. So many people have such a positive response towards the car, people online, neighbours, people in the street, people that are usually not even interested in cars... I guess you just don't see them very often.

Was looking for a 635 CSI originally, but then I found this M, and the rest is history

Still can't believe she's mine

Damn, going all the way to 29 without a car, well at least this one makes up for all those years without your own car.

Well it does give quite some pride of ownership, to own one of 5855 ever made :)

And going without a car up till now wasn't that hard, I've always made it everywhere with my bike  :)

Thanks, it was indeed in rather good shape. No rust (except two tiny little things between bumper and front wing, superficial and not really visible, which will be fixed soon), the guy at the MOT test was amazed there was no rust on the underside of the car.

I've been cleaning the interior heavily, treating the leather multiple times, and the outside will get a professional waxing and polishing job soon :)

wow   thats a nice Sixer. Hope you treat it with respect having nearly 300bhp in a beginners car
isnt that common. The sound of that one must be awesome. Have alot of fun with it and tell in advance when someday you want
to sell it :) - when seeing a CSI 2 weeks ago I said to a friend of mine that one day I also want an old six series bmw
although I never was a big fan of that edged dashboad and the middle exhaust that always looks like it does not belong there.

Ofcourse I will treat it with respect. No doughnuts and other stupid drifting crap with this baby. I plan on getting to know her calmly and once I'm confident enough, rev her a bit more. But it's mostly a car just to enjoy. The engine has so much torque and is so linear you can drive it really lazily. Remember I'm not 18 anymore  ;)

The sound is indeed pretty awesome, still has some grunt in there as opposed to BMW's contemporary engines.

I do have to say, that weird, offset exhaust is what makes it extra cool to me, it's just neat
