My bikes
« on: 03-Mar-2011, 21:01:57 »
Since others are posting pics of their bikes, I though I would too

I found this bike at a garage sale for $35 and bought for a project.
Before

It came out a little greener than I thought it would    Its not nearly as bright in this pic as it is in person.  I just use it for cruising around, going to the store, etc
After

This is my normal bike
Felt Z85  Its not a full on road bike, the geometry of the bike is set up more for comfort/distance than speed.  I ride it every day to work and on longer rides on the weekends.

It's amazing what sanding and paint will do. Looks great.. although a bit too 90's neon green for me :)

That's one hell of a daily rider you got. I'm hoping to pick up a cheap, light (I live in a 6 floor walk up), single gear bike so I don't have to worry about my classic trek getting stolen in NYC.

Ya I went a little overboard with the green    All the pieces looked great individually, but then when I put them together...

I love my Felt bike.  I bought it about 7 months ago and its been great so far.  It wasn't too expensive either considering it came with some nice components, Shimano 105 black and FSA crankset.

My new ride for the NYC Triathlon this summer 8) It comes in this weekend and then gets assembled & a full tune up at my local bike shop. Can't wait to take this puppy for a spin around central park

It's a 2004 Cervelo Soloist so it can switch from being a road bike to a tri bike by simply rotating the seatpost 180 degrees, and it has less than 200 miles on it to boot. It was a dealer's floor bike so it has never been scratched or dropped and has been meticulously maintained. I'd been trolling ebay and craigslist for about 8 months and then this came up and I knew I wanted it. The shop wanted to get rid of it and only offered "buy it now" and I couldn't resist. Great bike, great price... why not?

Jesus thats nice!  I would like to get another bike soon, similar to that with more of a race geometry.  I just have to clear it with my accountant first (accountant = girlfriend   )

I want to do a triathlon soon, a smaller one.  Like 10 mi bike, 1 mile run and 1500m swim.  I need to lose a few more pounds first though

Funny you mention it... I am an accountant  I moved to NYC about 8 months ago to start my job with PwC. I actually got a really good deal on it from a bike shop in california :good: All I have to do now is get some aerobars, pedals, etc and I'll be in business. Just trying to decide if I want black or white tape on the aerobars :?

Nonsense, training for a triathlon is the way to lose a lot of weight if thats really your goal. I'd say just jump right in and go for it :whip: , and you'll be on schedule to be in shape for tri-season. I had just finished up busy season(16 hour days, 7 days a weeks, ~100 straight days) and was slighltly disgusted with myself so this will be my first olympic distance triathlon. I've done sprints before, the shorter distance you mentioned, and they are nothing to be afraid of. If you train for a few months you could definitely cross the finish line with ease.

Im sort of training, I ride quite a bit.  I try to do at least 150-200 miles a week either on my bike or on the stationary bike at home.  Im not worried about the swimming.  I swam competitively for ~15 years, I just need to get back in shape for it.  I only need to lose about 10-15 pounds mostly from the gut, I like eating too much    I hate running though, unless im playing soccer or something.  Just running bores the crap out of me.  There are usually quite a few tri's here in the summer, short to long distances, so I may try to shoot for one of those.

I would say black tape for the bars.  The white looks nice but it gets dirty too quick.  I will probably change my white tape to black soon and get rid of those white tires.  I want some new wheels too.

bmuller that is one hell of a ride you picked up... and I thought you said you were looking for something cheap when I posted the photo of my bike!

Hit me up when you get it, I definitely want to check it out. We should ride, but I am no where thinking about doing any sort of Triathalon haha..

@ Novass

You've definitely got me beat as far as riding goes. I played soccer for 15 years and swam competitively throughout high school and college, but biking is still a little new to me and is my biggest concern in the triathlon. I'm right there with you on the eating thing, I like food way too much not to work out. I'm still well above my competition weight but I should easily be there by August.

@ DMF

I'll definitely give you a shout once the bike comes in and is ready to stretch its legs. And no worries, since I just bought the bike I haven't exactly done much riding either and I'm no where near where I need to be for the tri yet.

Initially I did want to just get something cheap but then I took a more realistic look at what it would cost me to find a bike that I would actually like/want. Considering the bike and its condition I still think I got it at a steal so I can't complain about spending a little more than I planned.

One thing about having a nice bike in NYC or any big city for that matter, is that it WILL get stolen if left out for a long period of time, or just the wrong time.

I'm hoping to pick up a nice, cheap, light single gear bike for commuting type biking. I'm always paranoid whenever I lock my bike up, even if its just for a short period of time!

True, but the only time this baby will spend outside is when I'm riding it or it is on the gated/locked/video monitored racks at my gym. Other than that, she's going to spend most of her time tucked away nice and cozy in the apartment :D

Im the same way.  The only time my bike is outside is when im on it.  At home its in the garage and at work its hidden in the back.  Saves me from having to lug around a heavy lock too.  When I go on rides on the weekend, I always see groups of guys hanging around at coffee shops, cafes, etc with a bunch of bikes just sitting around.  You could easily take one and no one would notice.  I dont understand it  :?   Plus I really dont want to spend more time than I have to in spandex

You decide on what kind of pedals youre gonna get yet?

Not yet, but if you have any suggestions I'd love to get some input. Right now I'm looking at a few profile design aerobars but won't be buying anything til the bike arrives. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you have to offer :)

Ya it sucks having to wear bike/spandex shorts, but believe me, go on one 50 mile ride with regular shorts and your taint will be on fire    Aside from having the padding to protect your crotch region, the spandex keeps your thighs fresh.  It looks gay as hell but the shorts have their purpose.  You have to use cream to prevent chaffing which makes it even stranger.  I tell my gf im going for a bike ride, then spend a few minutes rubbing cream all over the taint and then put on spandex shorts.  The whole process is kind of emasculating at first, but you get used to it...kind of

I dont know much about aerobars.  I think Stan is pretty into cycling, he may be better to ask.

I have Speedplay pedals and I love them.  I tried the Look style pedals which are nice, but the Speedplays are a lot easier to use.  You can click in on both sides, unlike the Look style, which is especially great in traffic.  Easy entry/exit too.
