Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid concept
« on: 01-Mar-2010, 22:01:59 »
I know you guys aren't big fans of hybrids (I'm not either), but apparently every major manufacturer is going to hop on the bandwagon in the near future, so we might as well get used to them. This looks quite good IMO and it sure has the performance to back it up.

Looks great.. and good to see it still has a V8, at 500hp no less. But by adding those electric motors, there won't be any manual transmission. Unless companies are actually developing that for these sport hybrids of the future?

I would love a hybrid sports car if they could keep the clutch in there.. and of course, invent batteries that weigh nothing!

Well said. Too bad hybrids and manual gearboxes are hardly ever seen together. Still cool to see that they fitted a modified version of the 3.4L V8 out of the RS Spyder though... 9200rpm anyone?

And what a beautiful design!! Carrera GT meets 917 in a compact and muscular package

Wow I love the design, especially the front  :good:

And personally I like hybrids. Sure, they won't be the definitive answer to global warming or oil-dependency, and the systems aren't perfect yet, but I think the current trend will lead to some very quick development of the technology... look at how far diesel has come in the last 20 years! In 10 years or so, hybrid engines might enable us to drive powerful sportscars with great fuel consumption, and hopefully lower weigth than right now...

The car is really small, on worldcarfans.com they related this car to the rumours that the Audi eTron / R4 might be the base of a future entry-level Porsche... this thing looks about the same size as the Audi?

Also cool to see Porsche turning the RS Spyder's V8 into a hybrid system, especially when you consider that the current LMP2 engines will be "promoted" to LMP1 engines starting 2011, and Porsche has long been rumoured to be interested in a hybrid attack at Le Mans :)

I love it inside and out and I really hope it makes production, but the specs sound too good to be true. It will probably not be very cheap either, but who cares, because it's a work of art!

Porsches usually win my head over, not my heart. By that I mean they convince me of their thoroughly good engineering and performance, but I don’t fall in love like I do with Lamborghinis etc. I never really liked the Porsche look, except for the 908, 917, 956 racing cars. In my book, there are even some downright ugly ones, like the Cayenne, Panamera and the 959.

Funny thing then, when this 918 Spyder (a hybrid even!) looks terrific, even by my standards!

That is TOO cool! I really hope this gets built and that they wont tone the design down a bit! Finally a Porsche with bold design decisions, looks awesome!

looks cool, like an updated CGT, but I sincerely say that all this poop about hybrid supercars is just nonsense, it's just publicity to sell cars to a dumb rich guy and to sort of convince the masses that hybrid is the future, which I'm almost certain, many of these car manufacturers know it ain't.
Ferrari were no less than complaining about the use of the KERS in F1, together with all the manufacturers they convinced FIA to take it out of the rules, and now they're adding it to their lineup with a supposed date of release in 3 years. Really? how many supercars are out there and how many of those get constantly driven in order to make this change noticable? how many will they produce and sell?
What about hydrogen or biofuels? "hydrogen is too expensive to extract and biofuels to produce" so is petroleum and gasoline, the problem is that the petroleum extractors don't want to loose their money, it's the most profitable business in the world. How many countries economy depend vastly on petroleum?
This is just a circus to keep ambientalists and "organic" food eaters happy...

OMG !!!

One of the coolest modern Porsche. I really like the CGT design inspiration.  :good:

I'm not really hot with the idea of ''Hibrid'', but if we still have a V8 engine inside I can do compromise in the future...and even to feeling Eco-green.

Funny to see Autoarts Porsche models in Svensson's video.  :good:

It's not the future, fuel cells are, this is just a stepping stone towards that. The thing about hybrid supercars is that it'll help them achieve the very drastic reduction of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in the new EURO regulations going in effect in the following years.

Thanks stmoritzer for the translated video. They made a very stupid mistake in the second video though. He's talking about "very low power-to-weight ratio" (wrongly translated from "sehr geringen Leistungsgewicht", which means weight-to-power ratio) at around 1:14 in the vid :D

awesome car, congrats to Weissach, nobody knew about this project and now they have a hybrid supercar, not only the japaneses can work with hybrid cars , the germans wait, but then they produce such a bomb.
