2006 BMW 330i - the new ride
« on: 28-Mar-2010, 00:37:21 »
After some research and some valuable advice from our BMW tech - Zman - we decided to buy a E90 330i

Some details:
  • Color: Graphite gray/Black leather
  • 6 speed manual
  • 42,000 miles with 1 year of warranty still on it
  • Power: 255hp/Torque: 220lb ft
  • Sport Package (18" wheels/Sports Suspension/Sport Seats)
  • Premium package (lumbar adjustment, some other minor stuff)
  • Cold Weather package (heated front seats/folding rear seats/headlamp washer)
  • Active cruise control
  • Clear bra in the front - so less chance of paint chips occurring
  • Lots of standard features: logic 7 premium speaker system, wood trim, moon roof, active xenon lights, dimming mirrors, etc.
  • Doesn't have the navigation system

This is a unique experience for me as I am buying a car unseen and without a test drive, Anyway, I have checked its records and given that the car is certified and pretty well maintained so far. I am taking a leap of faith here - wish me luck

The car is at a dealer in Augusta in Georgia and it will be shipped to me hopefully soon - still waiting to get a confirmation from a shipper.

I am putting the S4 on the market - in fact I will be showing it to someone tomorrow. So hopefully the car will sell soon. I will miss her but look forward to a long term experience of a different marque.

Here are some pictures of the car at the dealer. The "live" pictures is likely to happen next week.

congrats, nice car, looks great and the famous 3 Liter engine is still a good choice in a small car.

Great choice, Sameer! A colleague of mine had a similar 330i Touring. His car had an automatic gearbox. Even though I hate automatics, I did like the car very much. So I reckon with a manual gearbox it must be a wonderful drive! The engine note of the N52 is a real delight, both from inside the car and outside the car.

BTW, props for having the courage of buying a car you've never laid eyes on before. This is not meant as criticism though, on the contrary. I just don't know if I'll ever have faith enough to do that...

Hey Sammy, just had another thought.

You've got 8,000 miles left on the factory warranty/maintenance programs; look into how much it would be to extend them to 100,000 miles and tack on another 2 years. The brakes alone will be pretty expensive. Might be worth doing depending on how many miles you plan on putting on it annually.
Point it. Punch it.

I have been lucky to always find and buy cars fast. I bought the Ferrari within a month of starting to look for one. The Audi and Lexus were bought within 2 weeks of searching.

Now let me see if my luck extends to selling cars. Something tells me the S4 will be sold within a week. :)

Yes it is no S4 at least in the torque capacity - I was enjoying myself today driving the S4 -  savoring its immense torque and easy to drive character. She will be missed for sure.

Thanks guys - I am looking forward to a NA engine after 9 years with a boosted engine. :) Less toque but more progressive feeding of power. :)

I agree with you. This is not what I would normally do.

But it is hard to find a CPO car with 6 speed manual + Sport + Premium + Cold under 50,000 miles. There were none in Houston with all these features. So that's why I was forced into buying the car elsewhere.

Given the cost of flying to Georgia + hotel + food + gas for my wife and I, it was cheaper to ship it and have some money left over for any eventual issues than to go there and inspect it face to face. The E90 330i is pretty good car for a first time model - it debuted the E90 series. Only time will tell if my decision was okay or not. :)

The factory 4 year/50k warranty expired in 2009 as my car is a 2005 build. The 2 year CPO warranty will run out in April 2011.
As per the records, the break flush and rear brake pads were done in 2008 - there were some squeaking issues. All filters were replaced and the tires were changed about 8 months back. So hopefully it will not be too expensive for a couple months.

gah, damn early production cars.

Brake squeaks have been a pain in the as since the E60's. They changed something about the pad wear sensors so they start squealing on light application once the sensors start contacting the rotors. There as supposed to be an updated part, but i'm not so sure it's as functional as they thought it would be

I guess I missed this topic, congrats! It looks like an excellent daily driver, and a nice companion to your F-car. You are braver than I to buy a car sight-unseen, but have you at least test driven a 330i, even if it wasn't this one, or no? I can't wait to see some more pics once you get the car home.

I think you made a wise choice in not flying out to see a car, it's a major PITA to do that, and with a BMW I think you can be pretty sure that if they say the car is well kept it will be.  :good:

Why the "cold" package in Houston?  :?

You need euro-headlamps without the orange thingies in them...
And you're brave, I wouldn't do it...

That's the fun part - I haven't driven a 330i ever

I did drive a 335i though with the exact same specification as my car. AFAIK, the 330i and 335i have the same ride handling, braking, features ... except for the torque - the 335i is like my chipped S4 and the 330i is on paper about as fast as the pre-chipped S4 (maybe a few tenths off).

It certainly wont have the urge of my S4 but in other departments it will be perfect. And remember it is my daily driver  - so i think it will be fine.

The S4 was getting expensive to maintain. Last month, I had to spend $1000 to get the valve cover gaskets replaced and also one of the O2 sensors. Seems like every trip would require a stiff bill.

So Leap of faith is about right. :)

Why the "cold" package in Houston?  :?

You need euro-headlamps without the orange thingies in them...
And you're brave, I wouldn't do it...

Keep in mind this is a BMW certified car with known service history - I am not buying a car out of an auction with unknown past. THAT would be a real LEAP of faith. :) I am not that brave

Normally, I would have flown over, inspected it and driven the car back. But I am swamped at work and can't take time off to see it. Besides it would cost about $1500 for flight, stay, gas, food to go there and get the car. Shipping the car costs $525 - so I have $1000 buffer for tackling any issues that might occur.

Finding a car with similar specifications in Houston is going to  be difficult - manuals are rare and cold package are hardly found in my climate.

Why do I need the cold weather package? Mainly because I want the folding rear seats that come with it. I frequently carry long length items from the stores and I need to drop the seats to accommodate it. Folding seats are available as a standalone option but it is very rare for people to get it without springing for the cold weather package. And heated seats are a nice option - we get to use it a couple times in a year - it does get to freezing in winter here. :)

I like to buy and keep cars for a long period of time (say 9 -10 years) - therefore I want to have all the options that would be cover me in case I have to move to another place which may be warmer or colder.
E.g. I bought the S4 when I was in California and then I moved to Texas. :)

Dang! Well at least you drove a 335i hahahha. It sounds like you passed on the S4 at just about the right time too.

So when does the new car arrive? :)
