My wife's 2000 Lexus ES300
« on: 20-Jan-2008, 01:27:42 »
I bought a car for my wife this week. It's a 2000 Lexus ES300 with 120,000 miles on it and in pretty good condition. She wanted a reliable, comfy car with an auto transmission and a Lexus fit the bill to a T. It rides superbly, is quiet inside and has lots of room in the back (unlike my Audi)

It was a steal for $7,000 (+$250 for a windshield replacement as the old one had a crack in it). It is due for a major service next week.

$7,000?! You must know some people to get a Lexus for that cheap!   ;)

Those are definitely nice cars, and really quiet inside.

You can get a car like that for 7000 USD in the states? God damn, I hope the car market was more like that over here...

I wouldn't call it a piece of crap either, looks pretty decent.

Since when is a Lexus a piece of crap? :?

it's a toyota camry with some wood pieces added to the interior....rubbish really.

just my opinion...there should be a law mandating that Lexus cars should be purchased by people over the age of 50, OR those who have severe diabetes or joint pains.

no offense to Sameer though...or his wife.  i'm sure she'll like it fine if she doesn't really care all that much about cars!  I know SO many people who own these cars, that i have a special hatred towards them. LOL.

EDIT! ok maybe i'm being a bit too harsh. nice one on picking up a new ride for the wife ;)

7000$? That's about 4900€, right? I can go to the shop and get a Fiat Punto 1.3 from 2000 with 120,000 km in with the same money. Is that fair?

That's a nice looking Lexus and it should be a good ride for many miles still.

That really is a steal! Great condition for the miles it's done.. you know it's a southern car.

Nice car for your wife.. I remember you mentioning you would be getting her a beat up Civic to practice driving.

My former teacher had a similar color ES300. He was not 50 yet, but he looked like he hadn't slept in ten years or some  Quiet, teacherlike man, but few times I saw him get into his Lexus and leave the school parking. He gave the Lexus some serious boot, taking off with style :good:

What was the reaction of your wife BTW? did she said it looked like crap and that she wanted the 348 instead?

She loves it. I originally wanted to get a beater so that she could put in a few dents in it and I won't have to worry - she is learning how to drive BTW. But I saw this instead for a damn good price and couldn't resist it.

She doesn't really care about cars at all. Her words to me were find me a car that won't break down and take me to the stores in style. I think this car fits the bill. ;)

I'm glad she indulges me in my passion for cars.

Yeah it's a good thing she's not jumping on board too quickly. The other day I was at a stop light with my girlfriend and a particularly good looking car pulled up next to us and she exclaimed "Oh, I like that one A LOT!"

...it was a Flying Spur

"...uh...well honey...."

EDIT: Oh, and congrats on the new wheels man!

The ES300 is a Toyota Camry with wood pieces added to the interior in the same way that an Audi A4 is just a VW with a spiffed-up interior. Sure, it may not be the most exciting car out there, and the driving dynamics are not outstanding when compared against sports-cars, but that does not make it a bad car. And what's wrong with a Camry anyways? Its a great car for getting from A to B, not super stylish, but smooth ride, good mpg, good space, etc. all the stuff most people would look for in a car...

Btw, I've driven a number of miles in both the ES300 & ES330. It's certainly not my cup of tea car-wise, but I can think of much, much worse cars for day-to-day driving. Its quiet as a church, has a silky smooth transmission, and will run like a clock for years...

Quite a bargain! I doubt the main service would be THAT, but keep us up to date :)

BTW, never heard about this Lexus model as it doesn't exist around here.

well see, that's where you're mistaken.  an A4 is NOT just a VW with a spiffy interior...it's just not! it runs on its own platform.  The Passat, for example, has different dimensions, and altered chassis, and different components altogether.

The Camry and the ES are doing classic platform sharing, similar to how GM used to platform share in the 70s and 80s.  It's all just a sham to make more money...to turn regular, ordinary, best sellers into 'luxury cars'.

sameer didn't get ripped off.  but the person who originally bought this car was ripped off completely.

^Whatever, the fact remains that what you really drive is an AWD golf!

again, not true. the TT has all different drivetrain, suspension, shortened chassis, steering, brakes, engine internals....basically the whole car is upgraded from a Golf.

Unfortunately, most people just assume that two cars which look similar in size are the same...when they're not! Sure the TT started off on a Golf Chassis...but other than that, there isn't much that's the same at all...as even the chassis gets modified, leaving minimal credence to saying that it's an "AWD Golf".....not that there's anything wrong with an AWD Golf.  Although having said that, the MKIV R32, was in effect, a TT in disguise. ;)

Well of course the A4 isn't just a VW with a spiffy interior, but I was saying it to make a point. What's wrong with platform sharing anyways? Doesn't Nissan use quite a bit of platform sharing (350Z, G35 coupe & sedan, etc. on FM platform)? If you have a good mid-size 4 door platform to start with why do you need a whole new one? That sounds more like sound economics than a sham to me...

well i'm not particularly a fan of how Nissan have shared the G35 and 350Zs platform either, BUT at least they aren't based off an Altima.  That would be an example of poor sharing, IMO.
