i just read that the netherlands have no tank battalion anymore, that means no tanks in their army.
They closed the last 2 battalions "Regiment Huzaren van Sytzama" and "Regiment Huzaren Prins van Oranje" !!!

the reason: too expensive, the war has changed, in a fight against terrorism, they don't need big tanks.

Wow. What a starling display of short-sightedness. Haven't they ever heard of not planning for yesterday's war today? Not that the war on terrorism is by any stretch a completed war, but most certainly the next war that comes along will be different from the war on terrorism. Throwing away all of that accumulated expertise, equipment, & personnel seems pretty foolish. But I'm probably preaching to the choir here anyways...

yeah, it's absolutely ridiculous. Even during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, there were several cases where soldiers ran into ambushes by insurgents with RPG's, and tanks could've been more effective and safer than armored trucks at setting the soldiers free...

but because our politicians are afraid of calling the mission a war or a fighting mission (they want to sell it as a reconstruction or peacekeeping mission), they refused to send tanks even when we had them. Utterly disgraceful :bad: if they're not willing to send the troops in there with all the support possible, they should just not send troops at all, and accept the resulting loss in international influence in NATO / UN / G20 talks etcetera (that's often an important argument for co-operating with international coalitions for Dutch politicians... sad but true, we wage war for the money sometimes).

I remember when I used to work for the Canadian Ministry of Defence, the concept in the middle of 2K years was to use LAV3 Coyote light armoured vehicle instead of tanks and at that time we had few Leopard 1 and most Canadian tanks unit were dismantled. Soon we realized with our engagement in Afghanistan that we needed the firepower and the protection of tanks. It's a chance that our military planners bought 100 Leopard 2A4 from Netherlands in 2007 (Sorry Gucom) and leased twenty Leopard 2A6M from Germany. You're right sentra_dude to say that we never know the threat of tomorow, that's why in my book we always need tanks and attack helicopters.

^so true @ the threat of tomorrow
my cousin worked in the cavalry, first as a tank platoon commander, later as a light reconnaisance vehicle unit commander. All of a sudden, he and all of his colleagues in cavalry had no vehicles left to ride and nothing to do, except to wait around and see if they could be placed elsewhere, or got fired... so it probably won't take long before all the skills and knowledge and experience is gone from the army, too, and once that's the case it'll take years to build it up again should the government ever decide we need tanks again.

An ex-military Bell AH-1 Cobra helicopter crashes during the filming of an episode of the new Top Gear Korea spin-off. The Cobra was involved in racing a corvette, luckily both the pilot and crew member reported no injuries and were checked by the on-scene paramedics. Judging by the nose attitude and sound of the aircraft during the accident it appears the aircraft suffered a mechanical issue. The accident occurred at Coolidge Airport, Arizona, on March 1.

Luckily no one was injured !

I don't think we've posted any pics or vids of the 'Mach Loop' in this thread yet.
