Does driving a nicer car attract idiots?
« on: 11-Jan-2011, 00:58:18 »
Seriously. In the 2 months I've had my 328, I feel like I've encountered more retards than in the 4 years I drove the Toyota.

It's almost like people see the Roundel on the trunk and decide "I've got to prove something to this driver." From there, they either tailgate me (despite the fact I'm doing about 70mph), cut me off when there's no room, or refuse to let me go when it's my turn at a 4-way stop.

A few weeks ago I encountered a Prius holding up traffic by driving under the speed limit in the left lane. I ended up being the 6th and last car to pass him on the right,  since his head was firmly wedged up his ass, and as soon as I slot in about 4 lengths ahead of him, he guns it, gets on my ass and starts flashing his lights at me for the next 4 or 5 miles, which included following me across 4 lanes of traffic. WTF?!?! I admit that the Prius issue isn't a new thing. I've hated these fuckers since before I got the Bimmer, but this was above and beyond even their normal stupidity.

Maybe I'm wrong and driving is just getting harder somehow? Either way, don't be shocked if I'm back here in a few months with a story about some jack-wagon flying across 5 lanes to get to the carpool lane and collecting my front end in the process.

I had the brake switch set up on the Corolla so that the light would engage before the brakes ever did. Made for a couple of fun drives home

definitely.

although since i lowered and put darkened rims on the car a few years ago, i feel people are more intimidated by it and don't mess about as much......or maybe it's just less shiny now, and doesn't attract that same 'tuner' audience.

half the people in oz drive like weirdo's so i dont think anything weird is happening hahaha.. Although I will say that over the years, i've noticed when I drive our big work utes/trucks that the amount of people that pull out in front of you is about 400% less than in my wifes car!

but people are wackos these days.. the amount that drive high on drugs just staggers me!!  :whip: :whip:
we now have police drug testing drivers which is catching heaps of people... i wish they did it everyday...

With the tailgaters, using your window washers also helps a lot ;)
In the volvo the washers spray a mist, and well most of the tail gaters i encounter are from northern france or drive a white van and they're mostly out of windowwash with a nice result ;)

I dont really notice it since LA has a lot of nice cars and even more idiots.  I do notice that whenever I'm driving something that looks or sounds fast, everyone wants to race, even in rush hour traffic which is pretty stupid.

- maybe they are jealous

- or some drivers are slow on the road but as soon as you want to overtake them with an "lower-level" car their ego starts and they speed up (like overtaking Audis, Bmw, ... with my mighty Seat on the passes - happened alot)
- I do see some respect now with the 911, people clear the left lane more often than when I was appraoching with the Seat

Hence upgrade to 911 or similar

I get a lot of stares mostly, in my oldtimer, and requests from a certain kind of people to sell my car to them for cheap, which is always funny (some weeks ago, some dude in a Smart, started driving next to me on the bicycle path, gesturing me to pull down my window, meanwhile asking me about the car and whether I'd be willing to sell it)

But there's the occasional youngster in a Jap crap ricer car that thinks he needs to race me at the stoplight, which invariably leads to him being left in the dust, and me not really trying, which is always funny.

Being on the freeway, it's usually newer leasing/company car BMW's that are annoying, flashing and doing all kinds of stupid stuff trying to get past. If they try to get past on the right, I'll accelerate until they get stuck, then go to the right, and let them through  :nutz:

I usually stick to the speed limits (which is hard in my car), but a couple of months ago on the Autobahn, lots of pushy little assholes got what they deserved, being left at the spot almost instantly

Driving the 348 attracts a whole slew of idiots who want to prove that their cheap and yet car is faster than the pricey, overrated Ferrari. I ignore 90% of them.

Dont have the same reaction when driving the BMW. I am invisible in the Lexus. :)

With the mazda I am driving incognito and with the BMW I get most of the time thumbs up although the car looks a bit ricy with the OEM bodykit :D and the white wheels....

If my E30 is nice and shiny I get some looks on the road, but usually I surprise other cars when they can't keep up with it.

The 944 definitely got way more attention, negative and positive. People felt as if I was always going to be the one more cautious, there for giving them the idea to cut you off. This car has also received more dents while street parking than E30. Assholes.

Of course when you driving a nice car or sporty car you catch more attention of idiots...that's a sad reality.

What I hate the most is when I'm driving on the highway (I'm driving always a constant fast speed) you always have these idiots who think that you want to race them...and I'm always saying in my mind: Stupid fucker I'm driving 150km/h since and hour, I'm not racing I'm cruising at that speed. It happened also with exotic car owners who want to race with me on the highway, seriously my 265hp 300M Special can't compete with your +500hp M6, 911 turbo and Corvette so leave me alone or move out of the left lane .

^^^ They leave you alone because nothing says "I'll shoot you if you annoy me" better than a black E34.

With the Z4 it's not that bad. It attracts fairly neutral or positive attention. The most notable reactions to it seem to be when driving around with the top down in winter. Those reactions are just funny.

Sometimes ricers or mr. family man in his sad mini mpv try to race you at the lights, but usually I'm not tempted. Either I drive off slowly and make them look like idiots or I blow them away and make them look like idiots.

Schwalbe's post about cruising at 150 km/h sounds very familiar to me. Happens quite a lot, but it also happened to me in the E36.

Well I think it does. Whenever I was driving a really nice car for my work I always had fools on my journey trying to do stuff. When I was driving the white e92 M3 for instance everyone wanted to race me and keep up with me. Whenever I drove the Q7 or X5 or the 7 Series people didn't move out the way for me on the freeway. They also looked at me with very angry faces with the expression how on earth I would dare to drive such a verhicle..

It is funny to see though that on motorways/freeways over here the most agonizing and people doing weird things like speeding, keeping in the left lane and tailgating drive in hybrid cars like the PRIUS!! Recent survey confirmed this. People that drive those cars are idiots and have nothing to show in terms of looks or performance of the car and therefore drive so weird and bad in order to prove themselves I guess..

I can tell you in Norway the RS2 and RS4 is like a magnet to these tards....young guys in old A4/80's with massive styling kits and rear wings, tailgaiting, trying to provoke a race or overtake dangerously while taking pics.... :bad: :bad:

They just want to be close to their dream car Thomas...

I also had a few encounters with such people, other people in Audis mostly just wanted to see the RS2 or take a picture as they knew what it was, most people didnt notice it, but the ones that did often drove BMW 3 series or Cosworths and wanted to race....
