"BBC's 'Top Gear' show upsets Mexico

(AFP) – 6 hours ago

LONDON — Mexico's ambassador to Britain has complained to the BBC over the popular TV show "Top Gear", saying its presenters made "offensive, xenophobic and humiliating" comments about his country.

Eduardo Medina-Mora has written to the BBC about "insults" made by Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May in the show broadcast on Sunday.

In a discussion about a Mexican sports car, Hammond said vehicles reflected national characteristics so "Mexican cars are just going to be lazy".

The "outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults" risked stirring "bigoted feelings against the Mexican people", the ambassador wrote.

Reviewing the Mastretta, Hammond said: "Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat."

The presenters then described Mexican food as "sick with cheese on it".

Later in the exchange, Clarkson said "we won't get any complaints about this because the Mexican ambassador's going to be sitting there with a remote control like this" -- and he slumped down in his chair and faked a snore.

The BBC did not comment on the complaint but said it would respond directly to the ambassador.

It is the not the first time that "Top Gear", which is one of the BBC's most popular programmes for foreign sales, has sparked controversy.

Hundreds of viewers complained in 2008 after Clarkson joked about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes.

Last week, the programme was named most popular factual show at the National TV Awards.

Top Gear on mexicans

I didn't actually watch the whole show yet, but I heard about this and watched the clip of them... I mean, I'm usually the last person to be concerned about politically correct crap, but daaaamn. I think they went overboard on this one. Of course they are constantly saying offensive things about all kinds of people, Americans, Italians, French, Germans etc. but it's usually not this bad. What do you guys think, should they apologize or not?

I think they went too far. I was surprised that the comments came from the three of them. Clarkson is always the one that makes the inappropriate comments but Hammond just beat him this time. As I said before it's not because they commented about Mexico, but how they spread the word that being racist and ignorant is ok.
They could've done a simple joke. Like "the exhaust sounds like farts because it eats a lot of beans" or "it comes with a sombrero" or "it works with tequila" or something simple but they crossed the line. They confused a joke with offensive and ignorant remarks and thought they could get away with it because they always have.
I think an example should be made out of them, but I see them apologizing in a hypocritical way and then making fun out of it.

Yeah, that's kind of what I feel. It could have been a 'funny one liner' about the car and that's it, move on. Instead they spent what, 1min 40 seconds just trashing Mexicans and Mexico... It's like the co-worker who makes a joke and then just takes it waaay too far. People laugh at first but then it's just awkward.

Oh come on, don't be so lighthearted.
I'm getting sick an tired of people not seeing stuff as funny. As soon as you give a comment to someone that's from another country you're being racist.
I don't understand people being offended by it, I really don't understand it.

The ambassador isn't complaining about the fact they mentioned mexico, but because they mentioned him.

Frankly, I've never really understood the "lazy Mexican" stereotype. If they were so lazy, why are they sneaking across the US/Mexico border to do the agricultural jobs that no one else wants to do because of the low pay? Why are there always throngs of them outside hardware stores offering to install whatever you're buying for dirt cheap? And why is it whenever I drive a box truck (moving van) I always have a handful of them trying to get my attention to hire them to help me move?

That joke really didn't work for them since they're across an ocean from the people they're talking about. Maybe they figure they speak Spanish in Mexico, so they must be like the residents in Spain? IDK, what's the stereotype for Spain anyway? Pushbroom-eyebrowed d-bags?

I agree about people being offended too easily. But I still think TG took it too far with their comments. I can understand someone being offended if you say they are "lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against..." Basically saying they are all complete morons.

@ZfrkS62, yeah, I don't understand it either.  All the Mexicans I see are always working very hard or like you say... waiting outside of a Home Depot looking for work. Of course that is a stereotype as well, but eh.

I think one thing is doing a stereotypical comment, and other thing is taking it too far. Like I said a funny one liner, even if it was a bit harsh, would've been perfect. They could have perfectly done a couple of jokes about the drug cartels and situation the country is having and no one would have said anything.
The main issue is that Hammond said all those things were the "national characteristics" of Mexico. Crossing the line between a sterotypical joke and something racist is very easy IMO. The comments were ignorant, no one has said anything about the food, but just a few months ago, Mexican food was declared an Intangible Patrimony by UNESCO, calling it "refried sick" by people who have the means to travel and learn about another cultures just because it's "funny" is reflecting your ignorancen. If, they should've said something with "tacos" or "burritos" it would've been perfectly fine.

I don't get offended by sterotypical jokes or comments, the problem I see, as I've said before, is that being a show seen by millions, ignorant people take it as if it was the truth and gives the wrong image of something that's completly different. It spreads the word that it's ok to offend someone or something, in this case being a whole nation or race.

I wonder if they have the guts to make similar comments about black people and if many people would say, "hey, it was just a joke".

I totally agree, but I don't think this is about getting offended, this is about poor taste confused with being funny, and just because you're a celebrity it's ok to do so.

Every country has it's stereotypes. I posted the stereotypical map of Europe some time ago. TGs comments might have been a bit too much but it is still a tv show that is meant to be entertaining so people should take it as a joke.

Should you really care about the ignorant people? Their brain is so small that by the next football match is on tv they've forgotten everything that happened in their life so far...

And besides, we all know the brits know nothing about food and that safe sex means locking the door to them. The dutch are cheap, the germans are sausage eating pigs, the irish are drunk 24/7, the belgians can't agree about anything, the greek smell, the americans are fat...
And also, we all know that none of that means a thing and that every individual is unique...

Oh a little side note, indian food should be called sickfood, not mexican ;)

lol, here in Holland, the Belgians are always portrayed as being dumb as f*ck. It's largely true about the Dutch being cheap though

im not easily offended and i can laugh at a lot of 'offensive' humour like the kind of stuff you see on south park. the problem is that this was not even close to being funny. there is nothing funny about a laundry list of stereotypes. if the joke is clever and not mean spirited people dont get offended. this was taken way too far. i think the problem is that hammond is actually not that clever and couldnt think of anything on the spot so he just spouted a bunch of stereo types.

i went to see some stand up comedy in dc a few weeks ago and 99% of the jokes were over the top offensive. many of them were very funny. the problem comes when the joke doesnt have a clever aspect to it that makes fun of the sterotype itself and plays on that. if you just say something offensive about a race or a group of people with no real punchline you just come off as a dick and piss people off.

You're probably correct, but I still conclude that someone with the audience level that TG has should not do this kind of comments.

I know, but they shouldn't have gone so far.

Mexican food is really good, maybe it's not as sophisticated as others, but there are sauces that have more than 30 ingredients!

I love trying street food and I'm certain that by doing so I've created antibodies so I can consume pretty much any food around the world.
I've never been to India, though I've tried their food and I like it, maybe I like sick

What we are?

Indian food is ok if it's served with Western hygienic levels but if it's served truly Indian way with all the bacteria from the Mother Ganga it's guaranteed to give you a quick diet of few kilos.

That's why I'd like to avoid India, but it seems anway that I have to go there this year for business :nutz:

sorry for coming back to this thread, but I just by coincidence found, that this spot was recorded back in 2008 for the TopGear series 11!
I'm cleaning my HDD which is FULL and need some more space and found a file called "Top Gear News Uncut.wmv" from 5.8.2008 where this mexican thing is recorded.
it doesn't change the situation at all now, does it...
just wanted to let you know...
