volvo s70 exhaust / general exhaust question
« on: 07-Apr-2011, 05:51:47 »
my sister's volvo S70 which is my daily driver (since she lives in another city and does not use it) has a fucked muffler.

it has been a bit loud and i knew it was fucked up but then a couple days ago it got reallllly loud. this thing just roars. i took a look under the car tonight at my friends house (he has risers you can drive the car onto) and the muffler (section behind the cat) rusted clean off where it connects to the cat at a clamp. I dont know why we didnt take pictures. anyway it doesnt seem like a big deal and it seems like something my friend and i an fix ourselves. i initially thought i would just buy the muffler maybe used online but we thought maybe we could just find a tube that would fit over both sections and clamp that together or roll some sheet metal over the cat and muffler and clamp that on.

is that too ghetto of a fix or could it work? its a 13 year old car with 155K miles so im not trying to dump a lot of money in it. i love the car but im not sure i need to drop $150-200 on a muffler right now since it might need some other work in the near future.

it read that i need "carbon steel" or "304 stainless steel" for it to be safe.

i found 1 foot of 304 stainless steel tubing for 20 bucks and if i got the right size i feel like it would work.

thoughts?

the tube, plus some U-bolts will be sufficient for awhile. Keep in mind though that if one section rusted, more is close behind.

Thanks, Z. I think im going to go ahead with this. and with those U bolts, they wont overheat and cause problems right?

@ thamar. yeah 150K is not that bad and I want to have this car for many years to come but right now id rather go with a cheap fix if i can.

you need to find some that can take the heat of the exhaust system. If not they'll corrode faster and either break, or become a bigger pain to remove when you decide to replace the rusty parts outright.

went ahead and bought a cheapish muffler online. dealer wanted 400 i got one for 200 with free shipping

removed the old muffler last night which was a bitch and a half. fucking rubber hangers. wow. then once we had it unhooked it couldnt be removed because we didnt have enough clearance with our risers. we had to hack saw the fucking thing to get it off. this weekend i am going to a pit where we can install the new muffler. (my old high school has a garage for the buses and vans with a pit that i can use).

any tips for getting this thing back on the hangers? it was such a bitch to get them off. is it easier to get it back on?

this is what the part looks like. its all one big piece behind the cat and it needs the width of the muffler box in clearance to take off and on because of how its set up.

this is my buddies house. thats his 08 wrx

roaring exhaust noise is now gone thank god. it was a bitch to get it in there but cool to have done it with my buddy and at a low cost.

now i can hear all the other clicks and clacks and impending problems she will have...

a few days after the new pipe was put on one of the rear windows stopped working. it would go down but not up. weird problem since the motor was obviously fine. after driving around for  a week with the window down i popped the switch out, disconnected it from the wire and blew on it like a nintendo cartridge. now it works fine. sort of... it will go up and down on the door switch but only down on the master switch on the drivers door. whatever at least its up now.
