Need a little advice
« on: 10-May-2011, 04:10:07 »
Ultimately I know I am the only one that can make this decision, and I think my mind is already made up, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

I think I'm going to sell my Nova.  I've had the car for over 15 years now which is making the decision a little difficult.  My problem is that I'm not really into muscle cars like I used to be.  I want something that can turn, something I can take to the track.  I could do it with the Nova, but I think it would cost too much to get the car setup like that and I would rather start off with something better suited to corners from the factory.  I thought about keeping it and getting a third car, but that would end up costing a lot in insurance, etc.  It's going to be a little while before this actually happens, I need to fix a few things on the Nova before selling it to get a better price.

I'm planning on getting an early 70s 2 door Datsun 510 which kind of looks like a miniature Nova   I want to stick with a pre 1975 car so I don't have to worry about emissions.

Have any of you guys owned a car for a long period of time, sold it, then regretted it?

You're always going to miss that car. Doesn't matter what happens. For guys, the first car can mean more to them than their first love. You get over the girl, but you'll see other Novas on the street, or at car shows and you're always going to feel guilty about getting rid of it.

Whenever I see another 70's era Z I always miss my 240. Actually finding it that one day didn't help either.

I'm sure I will regret it, but I think it needs to be done.  It's almost like a marriage at this point.  I love the car, but I'm tired of it's shit and I want to trade it in for a newer model

I thought about selling the Audi, which I may still do, but that means the 510 would have to be more of a street car that I take to the track than a race car I drive on the street

I'm pretty sure you'll regret selling the Nova, but that's a normal thing. Just make sure that the next project is something special that somehow compensates for the Nova's departure.

Well I am guessing you dont owe any money on the Nova at this point, dont know how much you can get from selling it, but if you are able to just keep it in storage I would do that when you have had a car for that long selling it will hurt you now, and a hell of alot later especially if you really dont need to seel it for the money...

I would have keept it for later in life its not like it will be worth less in 15 new years, spend the time fixing it up when you get time and dont need to have it to drive around a long time project, you will regret it to much I am sure..

Please keep it...

Novass is alot cooler nick name on a forum than than Datsun also...

your best bet would be to sell it to a friend so you can still be with the car and maybe one day have a better shot of getting it back if you really regretted it.

Now you guys are making me rethink this whole thing.  Maybe I'll keep the Nova and sell my Audi (not that I can get very much money for it though).  It's going to be a little while before I pull the trigger on anything though.  I have some remodeling to do to the house and we are planning our next big trip.

I know so much about muscle cars and Japanese sportscars 1970's that I had to google both the nova and the datsun   but I'd really say, keep the nova, it has the charisma and by now also the memories, how cool would it be to still have that cherished old car when you're settled down, maybe teach the next generation about the emotive power of cars?

I suppose the third option, tuning the audi for some track-ability, is too expensive or complicated?

A lot of cars have been produced over the years so I can understand not knowing them all.  I know I sure don't
I think the Audi may cost too much to make into a track car but I hadn't really thought about it.  Like I said, with an early '70s 510, I wouldn't have to worry about emissions so I could basically do whatever I want to it.

I'm not tight on cash as far as paying the bills, etc go, but I am tight on cash for extra cars    I think I could really only afford to own, operate and insure 2 right now.

I think I have decided to keep the Nova.  I hope one day to put a new engine, suspension, etc, etc in it and I think I would like to keep it around a little longer.  Hopefully I can sell the Audi and get a 510 sometime soon.

I've been meaning to join in this discussion, but wasn't really sure what to say so I'll just give you my take on this subject.

I probably should have sold the E30 a long time ago when it started having problems, but I still feel like it's akin to giving away your first born. I now live in NYC, probably the best public transportation in the world, but yet I still own both the E30 and 944. I've come to the conclusion that if I'll sell one or both if I really need to... hell, it's good to have some motivation to make money right?

I completely understand your unwillingness to sell the Nova, but I'll play devils advocate a bit. It's been 15 years and you've grown to want something more out of a car (handling, etc).. I say, put it up for sale at the number a bit higher than what you would feel comfortable for letting it go for. If someone bites, you get a good price for it and they get to own something they really want.

I'd also be on the look out for that perfect 510, but only if you have the cash to buy it at will. I know how obsessive car hunting can be, but there's nothing like finding that perfect old lady owner with the unmolested classic car.

Its a 2001 A4 1.8t quattro 5spd.  It only has about 62,000 miles on it.  Service and part costs are getting to the point where they're more expensive than the car is worth.  I like the car, but I'm tired of dealing with little things going wrong that end up costing a lot of money even when I do the repairs myself.

I like your idea of putting up a bigger number than I'm comfortable with, I may try that.  It's hard to judge the value on old cars with modifications, I know I'll never get anywhere near what I put into it though.  If I had unlimited funds, I would love to put in a vette engine/trans/rearend, coilovers, monster disc brakes, etc.  I'm thinking about getting the 510 and using that as a semi dailey driver (I ride my bike to work so I don't need an every day car) and turning the Nova into a long term project.  I would love to have a full blown track car but that means I would have to get a truck/trailer and there aren't enough tracks close by to get a lot of use out of it.

I'm thinking about getting the Audi put up for sale within the next month or so and setting aside the cash until I find the right car since I'm not in a real hurry.

Thanks for all the input guys, I appreciate it!

Well the Audi got potential to be a great track car, it will cost some money but you can have a serious driving machine on your hands and with the prices for the go fast bits in the US compared to Norway its not all that bad really....

Well the guy you work with seems to be a great guy...:)

I know how it is we want so many things, last week I was close to buying a B5 RS4, but the owner got an offer the day before I went to bank he took so it was sold just infront of me, I was actually happy when it was sold so I didnt need to think more about that one as it was getting to me, and with the boat I bought last year and the car I got, the hobbies as RC stuff, hunting and so on it takes to much time and money allready we want it all but there are only so much money and so much time in a day so we cant get it all or do it all....

Just make sure you dont do anything you regret later, that is selling the Nova btw....;)
