i question the wisdom of naming your bike after a piece of prison contraband

It's named shiv b/c it will put a shiv in the heart of your opponents when you slaughter them on the bike leg. I realize I am a bit partial, but i prefer the cervelo P3 :good:

Nope.  A stabbing weapon of any sort is a "shank" and the action is getting "shanked."

Just one stupid question: what's the difference between a road bike and one designed specifically for triathlons? The riding position? :?

Basically aerodynamics, riding position and the flatbars, which are not allowed in UCI road races, unless, it's Time Trials. Even UCI allowed Time Trial machines have some differences from Triathlon bikes. I remember when Fabian Cancellara used a Shiv to win the TT World Championships last year, however they are not allowed anymore in that configuration.

Right.  The major difference is position and aerodynamics.  In a TT/Tri bike, the position of the rider is further forward.  It allows you to get into a lower position without closing up at the waist and lowering your capacity to breathe.  Also, at the sacrifice of more weight, they go more aero on the tubes.  In a short 10mi prologue or 30mi TT, the aero is worth the extra weight.  UCI has a 3:1 limit on aero though.  Meaning, any one piece or tube cannot be more than a 3:1 ratio.  The original Shiv was outlawed because Specialized's nosecone went beyond 3:1.  Specialized tried to say it was integral to the headset in the way they designed it, but the UCI saw around the argument and banned the design.  Several companies have now done similar designs, and they look the same as the original Shiv, so I don't understand why they are allowed?  Maybe the design was less of an aero cover and was truly more integrated or maybe it just barely meets the 3:1 limit?  Hard to see without seeing upclose.

Good stuff here on how a TT/Tri bike fit is actually rotated downward and foward:

The original Shiv that was banned:

Giant's new TT bike with a suspiciously similar nosecone style headtube (notice they put the front brake behind the fork to try to get it out of the clean air in front, keeping the bike more aero:

Might as well put it up to see also...TT bikes are so sexy:

My cousin does Ironman Triathlons...he rides either a P2 or P2C, I can't remember...with Zipp 808s I think.  Something like this if I remember right:

When I race it, I use a trispoke front wheel and covers on the rear:

This was my old aluminum Transition with front and rear trispokes:

Does that bike only have aerobars...? I'm not sure I could go for a bike with only aeros

@Stan
That is a very nice bike you got there, I'm a big fan of the transition series. :good:  Btw, that picture of the all white P3 is the exact bike I want, zipps and all   Most people on our team ride P2's or P2C's

I didn't notice that at first either...that Storck bike has no bullhorns or brakes??

Hmm...not sure why Storck's website's picture seems to leave the bullhorns off when it clearly comes with brakes, etc.  Here's a more complete picture:

Actually, it might be the completely flat side view so that the bullhorns just blend into the aero bars.  The picture just left off the brake levers...here's some better pictures of the cockpit:

I don't know much about Cervelos...is the P2 an aluminum bike and the P2C a carbon?

It's hot, but a road bike: http://www.cervelo.com/en_us/bikes/2012/s5/

Looks like it's Cervelo's response to Specialized's Venge...a road bike with as much aero borrowed from the TT bike as they can get away with.  It'll be heavier, so not likely a bike that a GC rider would likely use, but a bike that the sprinters will want, or a workhorse will use to push an attack as a set-up for the GC rider...

Excellent in the matte black.

I recently wrecked my third bike by driving it into the garage while still on my roof rack.  So, my S-Works Tarmac SL was toast:

I've replaced it with an S-Works Tarmac SL3 in carbon black with gloss white and red and am finishing the build once I get the ceramic bottom bracket bearings in.  But this is what it looks like:

It should look pretty hot.
